How do coupons work when there is a sale on that item you have a coupon for?

For example, the grocery store I shop at has some great deals going on right now. You can get Pizza 5/for $10 AND I have a coupon that says 40cents off 2 of the same pizzas. SO - would I get the full sale price of the pizza plus 40cents off of that as well??How do coupons work when there is a sale on that item you have a coupon for?
At both of the two stores I frequent, the coupon is redeemable on sale items. On rare occasions, this is not the case, but it is announced in the weekly sales flier. They also give double coupon reductions on those under $1, even for items already on sale. Used carefully, from time to time I actually, but very rarely, have gotten "paid" to remove an item from the store. Pretty cool when that happens! How do coupons work when there is a sale on that item you have a coupon for?
depends on the store. some will not honor coupons on sale items, some will. call the store and ask what their policy is.
