Hello yahoo world of Math experts,
I have a question for you:
I am trying to decide between these two deals,
Papa Johns has One Large Works or Tuscan Six Cheese Pizza for $11.00
They also have Three Medium Three Toppings for $21.00
Would it be cheaper (and would I get more area of pizza) to order the three mediums vs. two large (excluding toppings and tax)?
I see the math as this:
Large is 14 inch
Medium is 12 inch
Both are the same thickness, so all I would need to do is find the area of the pizza.
3.14 * 7 * 7 = 153.94
3.14 * 6 * 6 = 113.1
2 large = 307.88
3 mediums = 339.3
So in theory the three mediums for $21.00 (+tax) would be cheaper and have more pizza than 2 specialty pizzas for $22.00 (+tax)?Pizza Math: 3 mediums vs 2 larges?
One problem with your calculations is that you are ignoring that fact that the area increases faster than the circumference as the radius increases - one increases proportional to r, the other to r^2 - and since there is an untopped border of about an equal width, the effective topping covered area of the larger pizza will be disproportionately greater.Pizza Math: 3 mediums vs 2 larges?
Yes, but the smaller area of 2 larges is covered with more toppings.
